Trail Overview

This Empire State Trail section is a 19-mile on-road route, designated on the shoulders of state roadways. It is appropriate for experienced, long-distance bicyclists comfortable riding next to vehicle traffic. This section is not recommended for casual bicycle riders or hikers. The section starts at the intersection of Route 4 and Upper Newton Rd in Halfmoon. The bicycle route runs north past local parks, scenic views of the Hudson River, important Revolutionary War sites (including the Saratoga Battlefield and Schuyler House National Historic Parks) and Village main streets where local services are available. A Visitor Center on Ferry Street in the Village of Schuylerville (next to Fort Hardy Park) marks the northern end of this on-road bicycling section.
