Trail Overview
This 6-mile Empire State Trail section from Waterford to Halfmoon marks the beginning of the Champlain Canalway Trail (CCT). The route runs north from Peebles Island State Park. The first one-half mile is an on-road section, following Village streets through Waterford, where visitor services are available. The 5.5-mile off-road Champlain Canalway Trail segment, which has a stonedust surface welcoming walkers and bicyclists of all abilities, starts in Waterford at the intersection of 5th Street and Route 32 (Broad Street). The trail runs north on the towpath adjacent to the historic Champlain Canal, passing by wetlands, woods, and abandoned stone canal locks. The off-road trail ends at Upper Newtown Road in the Town of Halfmoon. Parking is available at Peebles Island, Lighthouse Park in Halfmoon, and at Upper Newtown Rd.
