Trail Overview
This 19-mile Empire State Trail section is an off-road trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. The trail starts in the Village of Brockport and runs east on a stonedust surface on the north side of the canal. In the Town of Greece, the trail crosses to the canal’s south side, switching to a paved asphalt surface. The route provides scenic vistas of rural landscapes and canal boats, bridges and gates. The Erie Canal approaching Rochester is excavated below grade, providing a wooded buffer from surrounding development. The segment ends in Genesee Valley Park in south Rochester, where a bike-pedestrian bridge carries the trail across the Genesee River. Public services are available in Brockport, Spencerport, Greece, and Rochester. From here, the Empire State Trail continues east toward Syracuse, while the intersecting Genesee River Trail heads north into downtown Rochester.
