Trail Overview
This 11-mile Empire State Trail section starts at Gateway Harbor Park in Tonawanda, and heads east along the Erie Canalway Trail. This scenic route follows the south side of the Erie Canal, providing water views of boats and wildlife. Most of the route is paved, off-road trail welcoming walkers and bicyclists of all abilities. However, there are four short on-road parts, totaling 3.5 miles, where trail users travel on the shoulders of roads, next to vehicle traffic. The eastern end of this section is at the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village in Amherst, at the intersection of New Road and Tonawanda Creek Road. Services are available in Tonawanda, and parking is available at a number of canal-front parks along the route.
