Trail Overview
This 3-mile Empire State Trail section is an on-road connection from East Greenbush to Albany. This section is appropriate for experienced bicyclists comfortable riding next to vehicle traffic and parked cars. The segment starts at Southern Avenue in the Town of East Greenbush, following local streets downhill (west) through the City of Rensselaer. The route crosses the Hudson River on the Dunn Memorial (Route 20) bridge, on a sidewalk that although narrow is protected from vehicle traffic by a guardrail. This segment ends with a short off-road path in the Corning Preserve, a waterfront park in the City of Albany. Note: A different EST route is marked for pedestrians on sidewalks along Route 20 from East Greenbush to Rensselaer. However, this section is not recommended for hikers – there are many nearby public parks that offer more inviting walking options.
