Trail Overview

This 12-mile section is part of a longer 35-mile on-road Empire State Trail section, from Kingston to the City of Hudson, that is appropriate for experienced, long-distance bicyclists comfortable riding next to vehicle traffic. The section starts at a parking area at John St in East Kingston, at the northern end of the Hudson River Brickyard Trail. The route travels north 2.5 miles to the Kingston Rhinecliff Bridge, turning east over the Hudson River. The bridge is 1.5 miles long – bicyclists ride across on the traffic shoulder, or dismount and walk across on a protected sidewalk. In Dutchess County, the route is designated on the shoulders of public roads north to the Village of Tivoli (including a 1.3-mile stonedust trail through Tivoli Bays Wildlife Management Area).
