Trail Overview
This 12-mile Empire State Trail section is an off-road trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. The trail follows the Erie Canalway Trail east from Fairport. The first 2 miles are paved trail; the remaining 10 miles are a stonedust trail (stonedust is finely-ground, compacted limestone, which provides a flat and durable surface). This scenic path provides sweeping views of the Erie Canal, woodlands, wetlands, and stream crossings. In Macedon, the trail crosses from the north to the south side of the canal on a restored bridge. Parking and access points are available at local parks and road crossings along the route. Services are available in the historic Villages of Fairport, Macedon, and Palmyra (there are no other services between the three villages).
