Trail Overview
This 20-mile Empire State Trail section is a mix of off-road trail segments, interspersed with on-road connections. Approximately half the route is off-road, stonedust trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. Some of the off-road trail sections run alongside the active Erie Canal, others are on the towpath of the historic 19th century canal. This section also includes several on-road portions, designated on the shoulders of Route 31, a 55-mph state roadway. The on-road sections are appropriate only for experienced long-distance bicyclists. For bicyclists comfortable riding next to vehicle traffic, the on-road segments are a scenic ride, winding through picturesque rural landscapes. Visitor services are available in Newark, Lyons, Clyde, and Savannah (there are no services available between the villages).
