Trail Overview
This 9-mile Empire State Trail section is an off-road trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. The trail heads east from Palmyra, following the Erie Canalway Trail on the north side of the canal. The trail has a stonedust surface (stonedust is finely-ground, compacted limestone that provides a flat and stable trail surface). This scenic path travels through woodlands and past large wetlands, including the “wide waters” section of the Erie Canal, providing views of boats, canal infrastructure, and wildlife. Parking and trail access is available at several local parks and road crossings. Public services are available in Palmyra and Newark (there are no services in the 9-mile trail stretch between the two villages).
