Trail Overview
The 10-mile Empire State Trail section from Savannah to Port Byron is an on-road bicycle route designated on the shoulders of Route 31, a 55-mph state roadway. The on-road sections are appropriate only for experienced long-distance bicyclists, comfortable riding next to vehicle traffic. The bicycle route travels past farmlands and scenic rural areas, including a long section through the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. This Empire State Trail section is not recommended for casual bicycle riders or hikers. The on-road section ends at Schasel Park, on the east side of Port Byron (the route east of here is an off-road trail). Visitor services are available in Savannah and Port Byron.
