The on-road sections are appropriate only for experienced long-distance bicyclists, comfortable riding next to vehicle traffic. The bicycle route travels past farmlands and scenic rural areas, including a long section through the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. This Empire State Trail section is not recommended for casual bicycle riders or hikers.
