Trail Overview
This 20-mile Empire State Trail section is an off-road trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. The segment starts at a trailhead parking area on Lakeport Rd, next to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. The trail heads east on the towpath of the original 19th century canal, named Old Erie Canal State Historic Park. The trail features long, uninterrupted trail stretches, passing by woodlands, wetlands and stream crossings. A new stonedust surface was installed in 2018 on the western 6 miles from Chittenango to Canastota. The trail east of Canastota is older stonedust, which remains serviceable but has some narrow sections (including a 2-mile section designated on a quiet rural road). The segment ends at Lock E-19 on the Erie Canal, where public parking is available. Visitor services are available in Chittenango and Canastota (there are no services along the 14-mile section running east of Canastota to Lock E-21).
