Trail Overview
This 20-mile Empire State Trail section is an off-road trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. The segment starts at a trailhead parking area on Lakeport Rd, next to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. The trail heads east on the towpath of the original 19th century canal, named Old Erie Canal State Historic Park. The trail features long, uninterrupted trail stretches, passing by woodlands, wetlands and stream crossings. New stonedust surfacing was installed on the off-raod segments in 2018 and 2022 east of Chittenango to Lock 21 . The segment ends at Lock E-21 on the Erie Canal, where public parking is available. Visitor services are available in Chittenango and Canastota (there are no services along the 14-mile section running east of Canastota to Lock E-21).
