Trail Overview
This 10-mile Empire State Trail section is an off-road trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. The segment starts at a trailhead parking area on Butternut Drive in DeWitt, heading east on the towpath of the original 19th century canal, named Old Erie Canal State Historic Park. The western 3 miles are a paved trail. The remaining 7 miles of the trail east to Chittenango has a stonedust surface (which was refreshed in 2018). This popular trail provides scenic views of the canal, historic stone locks, wetlands, and wildlife. Green Lakes State Park is located midway along the route, just south of the trail. The segment ends at a trailhead parking area on Lakeport Rd, next to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. There are a number of parking areas and access points along the route. Visitor services are available in DeWitt and Chittenango (there are no services between the two).
