Trail Overview
This 9-mile Empire State Trail section is an off-road trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. The segment starts at Lock E-19 on the active Erie Canal, where public parking is available. Named Old Erie Canal State Historic Park, the route runs east on a paved trail for 2 miles, providing views of boats and canal structures. The trail then switches to a stonedust surface, heading east toward Rome on the towpath of the 19th century canal. This section features long, continuous stretches of trail through deep woods. As the route enters Rome, the final 1.5 miles are designated on city streets, following West Dominick St to Fort Stanwix in downtown Rome. Visitor services are available in the City of Rome (there are no services along the 9-mile section running east from Lock E-21).
