Trail Overview
This 6-mile Empire State Trail section includes a mix of trail conditions, ranging from protected bike paths, to sidewalks and bicycle lanes on the shoulders of public roads. The route welcomes bicyclists and walkers of all abilities, but trail users must stay alert for vehicle traffic at many road crossings and intersections. The section starts on city streets in downtown Syracuse, at the intersection of West Genesee St and Wallace St. From there it runs east, following a marked 1.5-mile bicycle route on the shoulders of Water St. Starting at North Beech St, a new trail segment runs east for 3 miles in the grass median on Erie Blvd. The final 1.5-miles is a separated sidepath along Towpath Rd, ending at a trailhead parking area on Butternut Drive in DeWitt. Parking is available all along this segment. Visitor Services can be accessed in downtown Syracuse and DeWitt.
