Trail Overview

This 22-mile Empire State Trail section is a paved off-road trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. The trail section starts at a trailhead parking area on the west side of Canajoharie. The trail runs east, located on an abandoned rail bed passing by woodlands, farmlands, wetlands, and river views. This segment ends at a trailhead parking area in South Amsterdam, at the intersection of Bridge St and Erie St (for trail users wanting to visit downtown Amsterdam, a stunning bike-pedestrian gateway bridge across the Mohawk provides access to the City). This 22-mile section includes long, uninterrupted trail stretches between access points. Visitor services are available in Canajoharie, Fultonville, and Amsterdam (there are no services between them). Public parking is also available at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site.

Cycling Directions

Cue sheets provide step by step navigation instructions for cycling the trail in both directions.
