Trail Overview

This 4.5-mile section is an on-road route, intended for experienced bicyclists comfortable sharing the roadway with motor vehicles (this section is not recommended for walkers, hikers, or casual bicyclists). The on-road route is well marked with Empire State Trail signs, and is part of the Mohawk-Hudson Bike Hike Trail. The 4.5-mile on-road section runs from Cohoes south through Green Island to Watervliet. This segment ends at a trailhead parking area at the intersection of Broadway and 4th St in Watervliet (from there the Empire State Trail is an off-road trail heading south along the Hudson River to Albany). In Green Island, trail users also have the option of turning north on Cannon St, to access an off-road rail-trail along the Hudson River to Peebles Island State Park, which marks the beginning of the Champlain Canalway Trail. Visitor services are available all along this on-road route.
