Trail Overview
This 19-mile Empire State Trail section is an off-road trail welcoming bicyclists and walkers of all abilities. Some sections are paved asphalt trail; others are stonedust (which is finely ground, compacted limestone that provides a flat, stable trail surface). This trail section starts in Little Falls, on the south side of the Mohawk River/Erie Canal. The trail runs east on an abandoned railroad bed passing by woodlands, wetlands, streams, and river views. This 19-mile section includes long, uninterrupted trail stretches between access points. Visitor services are available in the Villages of Little Falls, Fort Plain, and Canajoharie (there are no services available between the three villages). Public parking is available at the Herkimer Home State Historic Site and a trailhead on the west side of Canajoharie.
